Since few years, a new subject has been inclueded in the Premiere's schedule : 'Travaux Personnels Encadrés' (TPE). It is a kind of research about a specific subject that a group of students have to do under the supervision of their teachers.
As far as I am concerned, now that this research is over, I can say that it has been of a great benefit for me even if i have to admit that this work has been a little bit difficult for me, as well as for the rest of the group; namely, Hajar and Awa.
The three of us have been interested in the theme of "Man and nature" and we have chosen the "Aromatherapia" and have started our research in order to determine the plant we have to focus on in our study, and, thus, we have chosen cloves "clous de girofle", used for the extraction of the eugenol by hydrodistillation. The problematic we have to deal with has been : "How to extracate the actif principles of the plants and what are their effects on the organism?".
In order to confirm our hypotheses, we have made many experiences. At first, we have encountred some difficulties because, while realizing the hydrodistillation, decantation, and the chromatography, we have found that only a little quantity of the eugenol has remained in the beaker since the ether has been evaporated. Nevertheless, thanks to our teachers' advice, we have managed to attempt a succesful experience based on the essential oil of cloves. And thus, we have demonstrated our hypotheses.
Personnaly, I have learnt a lot, as far as the scientific methods are concerned, I realized that this TPE has enriched my vocabulary in chemistry as well as in biology, especially in the english language since we are in a european class. I have also learnt how to organize my work and how to make researches by using the CDI ressources and those of Internet.
Inspite of the lack of time, only two hours a week programmed for this subject, I and the rest of the group have managed to surmount this difficulty by working mutally in harmony.
We have also discovered that we could enjoy making researchers and finding things by ourselves.
In order to give a touch of originality, we have opted for a magazine, created with Photoshop and Microsoft Offiche Publisher.
As a conclusion, this experience has learnt me how to invest in a long term work and have a better apprehension of the baccalaureat. The methods used through its steps differ from the usual ones and I really enjoyed it.
